“Remission” is the more accurate medical term when type 2 diabetes measures return below the diabetes threshold for a sustained period without glucose-lowering medication. It does not mean the condition can never return.
Why the distinction matters
NIDDK notes that blood glucose can rise back into the diabetes range, including with weight regain. This is why credible diabetes information should avoid turning remission evidence into a blanket “cure” promise.
What has been associated with remission?
Research has linked significant, sustained weight loss with remission in some people with type 2 diabetes. Likelihood varies with factors such as weight loss achieved, pancreatic function and diabetes duration.
